Chapter 14

The trial moved with the relentless, grinding efficiency of a federal machine. Witness after witness took the stand—financial auditors, former executive assistants who had been silenced by non-disclosure agreements, and forensic experts who detailed the exact mechanics of the maritime sabotage that ended Victor Vance’s life eight months prior.
On the fourth day of the trial, Julianna herself took the witness stand. Dressed in her sharp charcoal suit, she placed her hand on the Bible and swore to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. She did not stutter, nor did she falter under the cross-examination of Richard’s defense attorneys. She calmly recounted the events leading up to the aborted wedding day, the sudden violence in the cathedral, the opening of the steamer trunk, and the discovery of the stolen legacy. Her testimony was precise, factual, and devastatingly effective.
When she stepped down from the stand and returned to her seat in the gallery, Richard refused to look up from the defense table.
After two weeks of intense proceedings, the jury deliberated for less than four hours.
On a cold Friday afternoon, the courtroom was called back to order for the reading of the verdict. The foreman of the jury stood up, his face expressionless as he handed the signed verdict forms to the bailiff, who in turn delivered them to Judge Sterling.
The judge adjusted his glasses, scanned the papers, and looked down at the defendant. "On Count One through Four, regarding wire fraud, interstate embezzlement, and identity theft: How does the jury find the defendant?"
"Guilty, Your Honor," the foreman replied clearly.
"On Count Five, regarding premeditated murder in the first degree in connection with the death of Victor Vance: How does the jury find the defendant?"
"Guilty, Your Honor."

A collective, muted gasp rippled through the gallery. Richard closed his eyes, his head dropping forward until his forehead nearly touched the polished wood of the table. He offered no protest, no shouting, no dramatic denial. The game was over, and the house of cards had completely collapsed.
Judge Sterling banged his gavel once, the sharp ring echoing through the silent room with finality. "The defendant is remanded back to federal custody immediately, pending sentencing. Sentencing is scheduled for December fifteenth, where the court intends to impose the maximum statutory penalties without the possibility of parole. Court is adjourned."
