Chapter 12

The corporate boardroom of Vance Industries was bathed in the cool, gray light of a rainy Tuesday morning. Two weeks had passed since Richard’s arraignment, and the atmosphere inside the towering glass skyscraper was profoundly different from the frantic, paranoid environment Richard had fostered. The portraits of corrupt executives had been quietly removed from the walls, replaced by vintage photographs of Victor Vance and the original founding engineers of the firm.

Julianna sat at the head of the massive mahogany conference table. She wore a sharply tailored navy blue suit, her posture immaculate and unyielding. Surrounding her were the newly appointed federal trustees, corporate compliance officers, and a handful of loyal senior engineers who had survived Richard’s purge of the company years ago.

"The forensic audit is complete," the lead compliance officer announced, sliding a comprehensive report across the polished wood toward Julianna. "Every shell company Richard established has been successfully dismantled. The laundered capital has been seized by the federal receivership and redirected back into the corporate reserve accounts."

Julianna opened the binder, reviewing the numbers with a sharp, discerning eye. Her uncle had taught her the basics of corporate governance when she was still in university, lessons she had nearly forgotten under the suffocating weight of Richard’s dominance. Now, those lessons were her armor and her tools.

"And the pending municipal development contracts?" Julianna asked, looking up at the compliance officer.

"Terminated," a senior engineer named Thomas Vance—a distant cousin who had been demoted to a basement cubicle under Richard’s regime—spoke up from the end of the table. "We’ve severed all ties with the corrupt members of the development board. We are pivoting the entire company back to its core mission: sustainable infrastructure and ethical manufacturing, exactly as Victor intended."

Julianna nodded slowly, a profound sense of closure washing over her. "Make the public announcement by end of day. I want a complete break from the previous administration. No excuses, no hidden clauses."

"Yes, Ms. Vance," the room chorused in unison.

After the meeting adjourned, Julianna remained in the boardroom alone, looking out over the sprawling expanse of the city below. The rain beat a steady, calming rhythm against the triple-paned glass. Her phone buzzed quietly on the table. She picked it up and saw an encrypted notification from Agent Hayes: Federal indictment expansion approved. Richard's co-conspirators on the board have officially been taken into custody. Trial is locked in for November.

Julianna locked the phone and set it back down. The nightmare that had begun at the altar of the cathedral was systematically being unraveled, piece by legal piece, truth by hard-fought truth. She had not only survived the deception; she had reclaimed her life, her family's legacy, and her own agency.
