Chapter 8

The fluorescent lights of the downtown central precinct hummed with relentless energy as the gray light of dawn began to bleed through the high security windows. The chaotic energy of the midnight gala felt like a distant nightmare, replaced now by the sterile reality of interrogation rooms, coffee-stained desks, and the relentless clatter of computer keyboards.
Elena sat on a metal bench in the quiet corridor, wrapped tightly in Julian’s oversized wool coat over her cream-colored knit cardigan. Her blue eyes were bloodshot from exhaustion, but the fog of uncertainty that had clouded her mind for months was entirely gone.
Down the hall, through the reinforced glass of holding cell number four, Matthew paced erratically like a caged animal. His expensive Italian suit was rumpled, his tie loosened, and his hair wildly disheveled. Across from him in holding cell three, Veronica sat rigidly on a concrete bench, her white satin dress stained with mud from the garden, refusing to look at anyone.
Footsteps echoed down the linoleum floor. Julian approached, holding two cardboard cups of black coffee. He handed one to Elena, his dark styled hair falling casually across his forehead.
“You should try to sleep for an hour, Elena,” Julian said softly, sitting beside her on the bench. “The federal prosecutor’s office has already frozen all of Matthew and Veronica’s personal accounts, and Clara’s forensic download of their private server is fully verified.”
Elena accepted the paper cup, letting the warmth seep into her freezing fingers. She took a slow sip before looking up at him. “I haven’t felt this light in three years, Julian. Ever since my father passed away and Matthew took over the family legal management, I felt like I was drowning in slow motion. But I still haven’t heard anything about Lily.”
Julian’s expression softened, though a shadow of lingering tension remained in his eyes. “Child protective services stepped in immediately after Veronica was booked. Lily is currently in temporary protective custody with a court-appointed pediatric guardian. She is safe, and her medical and emotional welfare are being prioritized.”
Elena’s eyes welled with fresh tears, this time of profound relief. “Can I see her? When?”
“As soon as the emergency custody hearing concludes this morning,” Julian assured her, placing a reassuring hand over her trembling fingers. “The judge has already fast-tracked your petition based on the documentary evidence Clara provided. Matthew’s custody rights have been summarily suspended pending trial.”

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the end of the precinct corridor swung open with a loud bang. Marcus Cole walked in flanked by two high-priced defense attorneys, having just posted an exorbitant preliminary bail bond. Cole’s expression was ice-cold as he strode past Julian and Elena.
Cole stopped just inches from Julian, his voice dripping with venom. “Enjoy your little victory in the precinct, Julian. You exposed our lower-tier partners, but you have no idea who actually owns the underlying debt on Elena’s family estate. The primary mortgage holder is calling the note due at noon today—and you don’t have twenty-four hours to raise five million dollars.”
