Chapter 2

The synthesized voice from Julian’s smartphone echoed off the vaulted ceiling, stripping away the celebratory atmosphere of the gala in a single instant. The polished ballroom, filled with elite guests holding champagne flutes, fell into a profound, suffocating hush. Every eye darted from the glowing screen back to Matthew, whose crimson face twisted from manufactured confidence into naked panic.
Veronica stepped backward, her low-cut white satin dress rustling sharply against the marble floor. She instinctively pulled six-year-old Lily closer, the child’s pale blue dress catching the cold light of the emergency exit signs.
“This is an absurdity,” Matthew stammered, his high-powered attorney facade cracking visibly as he pointed a trembling finger at Julian. “A malicious stunt. Cyber-tampering by a deranged stalker trying to disrupt a private family settlement.”
Julian did not flinch. His intense gaze remained locked on Matthew, his dark styled hair immaculate despite the tense confrontation. He took a measured step forward, the white button-down shirt beneath his suit absorbing the ambient amber light of the chandeliers.
“You call a fabricated docket number a family settlement, Matthew?” Julian’s voice cut through the ambient hum of the room like a razor. “You forged the signature of Family Court Judge Henderson. You printed a ghost decree to trick Elena into signing away her matrimonial rights, her home, and her custody rights over Lily.”
Elena remained on her knees near the dais, her cream-colored knit cardigan stained with champagne, her palm still stinging from the slap Veronica had delivered moments earlier. She looked up at Julian, then at Matthew, her mind struggling to process the labyrinth of deception that had stolen her life over the past three months.
“Is that true?” Elena whispered, her voice cracking with raw, unmitigated anguish. “The eviction notices... the bank freezes... it was all a fake?”
Veronica forced a brittle, defensive smile, though her hands shook visibly against her gold necklace. “Elena, darling, don’t listen to this stranger. He is mentally unstable. He’s fabricating a conspiracy to manipulate you.”
Julian turned his head slowly toward Veronica, a cold, calculated smile touching the corner of his clean-shaven mouth. He tapped the screen of his smartphone, switching the audio feed from the courthouse directory to a recorded phone conversation.
The ballroom speakers, patched into the venue’s primary sound system by an anonymous ally moments prior, suddenly broadcasted Matthew’s unmistakable voice clear as day: "Just push the fake decree through the Friday night drop-box, make sure Elena signs the waiver before morning, and nobody will ever check the database over the weekend."
Matthew lunged forward, his face turning an alarming shade of purple as he screamed, “Turn that off! You’re violating wiretapping laws!”

Before Matthew could reach the phone, the two uniform police officers near the service entrance stepped forward, blocking his path with heavy, unyielding authority.
The lead officer rested his hand firmly on his holster, his eyes fixed on Matthew and Veronica. “Mr. Matthew Vance, Mrs. Veronica Vance. Please step away from the table. You both need to come with us downtown right now.”
