Chapter 5

The luxury sedan cut silently through the deserted downtown avenues, its headlights slicing through the misty midnight fog. The city slept beneath a veneer of quiet complacency, oblivious to the high-stakes legal war unfolding in its shadows. In the passenger seat, Elena stared blankly out the window, watching the neon signs of skyscrapers blur into streaks of crimson and amber.
“Julian,” Elena broke the heavy silence, her voice barely audible above the low hum of the engine. “How do you even know where Judge Morrison lives? He’s the head of the municipal land registry. His residential address is classified for security reasons.”
Julian kept his eyes fixed on the empty highway ahead, his hands resting easily on the leather steering wheel. His white button-down shirt cuffs peeked out neatly from his tailored suit sleeves.
“When you spend years tracking systemic corporate corruption, Elena, you learn that public servants hiding behind classified addresses are usually the ones with the most vulnerable paper trails,” Julian answered calmly. “Morrison has approved three suspicious expedited property transfers in this district over the past six months, all tied to the same offshore entity that now holds your family estate.”
Elena turned her head, studying his sharp profile in the dashboard light. There was an aura of dangerous competence about him that both terrified and comforted her. “You aren’t just a private investigator, are you? Who are you really, Julian?”
Julian did not answer immediately. He flicked his turn signal, guiding the vehicle off the main highway and onto a winding, tree-lined residential street characterized by sprawling iron gates and sprawling Victorian mansions. He parked the sedan a hundred yards away from a stately brick residence surrounded by towering oak trees, cutting the engine and plunging the interior into absolute stillness.
“Let’s just say I have a personal score to settle with the legal syndicate that Matthew and Veronica operate within,” Julian said quietly, turning to meet her gaze. “They ruined other families before yours, Elena. Your case is simply the one where they finally made a fatal clerical error.”
Before Elena could press further, the front door of Judge Morrison’s residence creaked open. A tall, middle-aged man in a silk bathrobe stepped out onto the porch, clutching a steaming mug of coffee and checking his wristwatch nervously.
“Look,” Elena whispered, grabbing Julian’s sleeve. “He’s expecting someone.”
Julian narrowed his eyes. Through the misty darkness, a sleek black town car pulled silently into Morrison’s circular driveway. The rear door opened, and a sharp-suited man stepped out—not Matthew, but Marcus Cole, senior partner at Vance & Cole Associates, and the man pulling the strings behind Matthew’s entire legal empire.
Cole carried a slim leather briefcase in one hand and a thick envelope in the other. He walked up the porch steps, greeted Judge Morrison with a cold, practiced smile, and handed him the envelope.

Julian’s jaw tightened. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his smartphone, recording every second of the clandestine transaction through the telephoto lens of his camera.
“They’re executing the final bribe right now,” Julian muttered under his breath. “If Morrison stamps those deeds before we reach him, the house is legally gone.”
