Chapter 1

The crystal chandelier above the ballroom cast prismatic shards across the polished marble floor. Julian stood near the double doors, his tailored white suit stark against the opulent reds and golds of the anniversary gala. His dark styled hair caught the amber light, but his eyes were locked entirely on the scene unfolding by the dais.
Elena knelt on the cold floor, her cream-colored knit cardigan and matching skirt damp with spilled champagne. A raw, reddish mark marred her pale cheek. Across from her stood Veronica in a low-cut white satin dress, her fingers resting lightly on the shoulder of six-year-old Lily, who clutched a pale blue cardigan to her chest. Matthew, Veronica’s high-powered attorney husband, hovered just behind them with a condescending smirk.
Julian walked steadily toward the center, his leather shoes clicking against the stone.
“Take your hands off her,” Julian said firmly.
Elena looked up, her blue eyes wide with shock and unshed tears. She reached out a trembling hand toward Julian’s immaculate trousers.
Julian knelt slightly, his voice dropping to a controlled, dangerous register.
“Who did this?”
Elena’s lips quivered.
“He... he said the court papers were final. He said I had no rights left.”
Julian stood back up, his gaze fixing on Veronica and Matthew. Veronica’s confidence faltered, her posture tightening as she adjusted her heavy gold necklace.
“Who are you?” Veronica asked quietly, her voice carrying a nervous tremor that she tried desperately to mask.
Julian did not answer with words immediately. Instead, he pulled his smartphone from his pocket, the screen glowing brightly with an active call recording. He raised the device toward the circle of onlookers and the two uniform police officers standing near the service entrance.
“The divorce case number you provided does not exist,” Julian said, his voice echoing in the sudden, suffocating silence of the grand room.
Matthew stepped forward, his face flushing crimson with sudden rage.

“You have no idea who you are dealing with, pal. Security, get this lunatic out of here before—"
Before Matthew could finish, the phone speaker crackled to life, broadcasting a synthesized automated voice from the county courthouse directory declaring the docket number completely void.
