Chapter 14

The entryway of the safehouse grew instantly tense, the air thick with unresolved history and lethal family betrayal. David Vance stood in the foyer, his tailored black trench coat parted to reveal an expensive Italian suit that looked hauntingly similar in cut to Julian’s own signature white attire.
Julian did not step back. His dark eyes locked onto David’s with an intensity that could shatter glass.
“You died twelve years ago, David,” Julian said, his voice dangerously low, restrained, and completely devoid of surprise. “The coroner identified the dental records from the wreckage in the Alps. Or did you bribe them just like you bribed Morrison?”
David chuckled softly, stepping further into the hallway and casually inspecting the rustic decor as if he were an uninvited art critic. “Dental records are remarkably easy to alter when you own the dental lab, Julian. I needed to disappear to scale Meridian globally without federal oversight. Family name baggage, you understand.”
From behind the half-open study door, Elena watched in breathless horror, holding a sleeping Lily tightly against her chest. She recognized the family resemblance instantly, but the cold, calculating aura radiating from David was a polar opposite to Julian’s protective resolve.
“You ruined innocent families,” Julian accused, taking a slow, calculated step toward his brother. “You destroyed Elena’s estate, manipulated Matthew and Cole as disposable pawns, and built an empire on engineered fraud.”
David stopped pacing and turned to face his brother, his smile fading into a chilling, analytical expression. “Business, Julian. Pure, efficient corporate Darwinism. People like Elena’s father were sentimental dinosaurs holding onto outdated land parcels that could be better utilized by our offshore logistics hubs. Matthew and Cole simply accelerated the transition.”
David reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a sleek encrypted flash drive and placing it gently on the wooden console table near the door.
“Which brings us to why I’m here,” David continued smoothly. “You’ve dismantled our local municipal assets, frozen our regional accounts, and made a spectacular mess of the county land registry. But you cannot touch the parent trust. It’s protected by multi-jurisdictional diplomatic insulation.”
Julian crossed his arms, his white-suited posture unwavering. “Get to the point, David.”
“The point is simple,” David said, stepping closer until they were eye-to-eye. “You walk away from Elena’s estate case right now. You drop all pending federal disclosures regarding the Meridian Syndicate. In exchange, I leave your name off the syndicate’s permanent asset forfeiture list, and you can keep your little life intact.”
Julian didn’t blink. A cold, dangerous smile touched the corner of his clean-shaven mouth.

“You always underestimated me, David,” Julian whispered softly. “You think I spent twelve years tracking you down just to negotiate a settlement?”
Before David could react, the red security indicator lights on the hallway console blinked rapidly from green to flashing crimson.
