Chapter 4

The heavy leather envelope felt unnaturally cold in Julian’s hand as the crisp ballroom air gave way to the damp chill of the midnight parking courtyard. The distant wail of a police cruiser carrying Matthew and Veronica faded into the humid city night, leaving behind an eerie, suspended silence.

Julian opened the envelope beneath the amber glow of the exit lamps. Thick stacks of parchment paper slipped slightly, revealing certified property transfer deeds, corporate bylaws of a Cayman Islands shell company, and most damningly, a series of internal email threads proving premeditated conspiracy between Matthew and Veronica.

Elena stared over Julian’s shoulder, her pale skin illuminated by the pale light of the smartphone screen as Julian photographed every single page as a cloud backup. The raw red mark on her cheek throbbed in the cool night air, a physical reminder of the violence and betrayal she had endured.

“They planned this for over a year,” Elena whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of grief and rising fury. She clutched her cream-colored knit cardigan tighter around her shoulders. “Every dinner, every legal consultation, every fake audit of my father’s company... it was all an elaborate trap to bleed us dry and steal the estate.”

Julian slipped the envelope inside his tailored white suit jacket, securing it safely against his chest. He turned to face Clara, the junior legal assistant who had risked her career—and potentially her safety—to deliver the evidence.

“You understand the legal peril of what you just handed us, Clara?” Julian asked, his voice low, steady, and devoid of judgment. “Once Matthew’s defense team realizes you breached the office firewall, they will come after you with every injunction and retaliatory lawsuit imaginable.”

Clara swallowed hard, adjusting the collar of her black trench coat. She looked back toward the glittering ballroom doors, terrified yet resolute. “I couldn’t watch them destroy her anymore, Mr. Vance. I saw what they did to little Lily, treating her like a prop in their financial takeover. I have copies of the digital keys to Matthew’s private server in my apartment. If you need me to testify before a federal judge at dawn, I will.”

Julian nodded once, a gesture of profound respect. “Go to a secure location immediately. Do not use your phone, do not log into your social media, and lock your doors. I will send a car for you in two hours.”

Clara hurried toward the subterranean parking lot, her footsteps echoing sharply against the concrete before fading into the night.

Elena turned her tear-filled blue eyes to Julian. “We have less than six hours before the county land registry office opens for Monday morning filings. If those deeds are processed and stamped by the registrar, the transfer becomes legally irreversible under expedited corporate property laws. What do we do now, Julian?”

Julian unlocked his luxury sedan parked in the VIP bay, holding the passenger door open for her. His dark styled hair ruffled slightly in the midnight breeze.

“We don’t wait for sunrise,” Julian said, his intense expression hardening. “We go straight to the registrar’s private residence and wake him up.”
