Chapter 9: The Restoration

Over the next month, the Vance estate underwent a quiet transformation. The cold, sterile decorations Claire had imposed were replaced with warmth, color, and memories of real family life.

Julian spent his days bringing back Clara’s original artwork from the police evidence lockers and hanging them back on the high walls. The portrait that started the confrontation—a vibrant oil painting of a sunlit garden—was placed prominently above the fireplace in the main living hall.

Lily watched her father hang the frame, a bright smile on her face. ""It looks right now, Daddy.""

""It does, sweetie,"" Julian said, stepping down from the stool and kneeling beside her. ""And from now on, nothing gets hidden in this house. If you ever feel scared, sad, or angry, you tell me right away. No secrets.""

""No secrets,"" Lily repeated, hugging his neck tightly. For the first time since her mother died, she felt entirely safe in her own home.
