Chapter 1: The Cold Blade

Julian’s breath hitched as the dining room air turned to ice. The silver blade in Claire’s hand glistened under the chandelier, casting a sharp reflection across her icy eyes. For a fraction of a second, nobody moved. Little Lily pressed her small back against Elena, the maid whose hands trembled gently on the child’s shoulders.
""Claire,"" Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, controlled register. ""Put the knife down.""
Claire let out a sharp, bitter laugh that lacked any warmth. ""You believe them? A child who lives in a fantasy world and a servant who barely speaks unless spoken to?""
""I asked you to put it down,"" Julian repeated, stepping slowly between the table and his daughter.
""I gave you everything, Julian,"" Claire hissed, her knuckles whitening as her grip tightened on the handle. ""I built this family’s reputation from nothing while you stared at dusty archives. And you let them humiliate me in my own dining room?""

Lily stepped out from behind Elena, her hazel eyes steady despite her tiny frame. ""The truth doesn't humiliate people, Claire. It just uncovers what was already hidden.""
The words struck the room like thunder. Claire took a step back, her sharp composure faltering for a single breath as the weight of the child's honesty hit the room.
