Chapter 9: The Work of the Tide

Over the next two years, the center became an engine of regional healing across the Delmarva Peninsula.

Allison spent her days providing free legal counsel to hundreds of elderly farming families, defending them against predatory reverse-mortgage schemes and corporate farmland developers.

Mei Chen moved from Chicago to join the foundation as its full-time director of clinical oversight, building an open-access database that tracked hospital compliance across three states.

In the timber workshop beside the clinic, Caleb continued to build hand-crafted wooden skiffs, rocking chairs, and garden benches with young apprentices from the local high school.

Evelyn spent her mornings tending the community vegetable gardens, growing heritage heirloom tomatoes, sweet corn, and lavender that were distributed freely to senior centers in town.

Every evening at dusk, Allison and Caleb would walk down to the end of the long wooden pier behind the farmhouse, watching the sun sink behind the western shoreline of the Chesapeake.

They would sit on the weathered timber bench, listening to the gentle lap of the water against the pilings and the distant call of the night herons.

Caleb reached into his pocket one evening in late September, pulling out a small, hand-carved wooden box made of polished heart-pine.

He placed it gently into Allison’s hand.

Inside was a simple, elegant ring hand-forged from native Chesapeake river copper, inlaid with a single, unrefined river pearl found in the oyster shallows of the cove.

""I know I don't have corporate partnerships or diamond galas to offer you, Allison,"" Caleb said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with unreserved devotion. ""But I promise to stand by your side, guard your family, and build shelter for your life for as long as I draw breath.""

Allison looked at the pearl, then looked up into the honest, unwavering eyes of the man who had helped her rebuild her world.

Her heart was completely full.

""Yes, Caleb,"" Allison whispered, tears of pure peace shining on her cheeks. ""With all my heart, yes.""
