Chapter 11: The Letter from the Mountain

Three years later, on a crisp autumn morning, a plain manila envelope arrived at the foundation’s postbox, bearing the official stamp of the Federal Correctional Camp in McKean, Pennsylvania.

It was from Bradley.

Allison sat on the front porch swing with Evelyn, watching the autumn leaves drift across the lawn as she opened the handwritten letter.

*Allison,*

*I am writing this from the forestry maintenance unit where I am completing the fourth year of my sentence.*

*For forty years, I believed that success was having enough money to look down on everyone around me. I spent my life looking for shortcuts, exploiting our parents’ kindness, and blaming you for my own failures.*

*Every day for the last four years, I have planted seedlings in the burnt-out timber forests of the Allegheny Mountains. My hands are scarred, my back is sore, and I earn twelve cents an hour.*

*For the first time in my life, when I lay my head down on the bunk at night, I don't have to tell a lie to fall asleep.*

*I saw the newspaper article about the Elder Care Center in the prison library last week. I saw the picture of Mom smiling in the garden.*

*I do not ask you to forgive me. I know what I broke cannot be easily mended. But I needed you to know that the monster who tried to steal our mother’s life is finally dead, and an honest man is trying to grow in his place.*

*Tell Mom I am sorry. And tell her I am finally learning how to work.*

*Bradley.*

Allison read the letter slowly, folded it neatly, and handed it to Evelyn.

Evelyn read every word with trembling fingers, pressing the paper against her heart as a single, quiet tear rolled down her cheek.

""He's finding the ground, Allison,"" Evelyn whispered softly.

""Yes, Mom,"" Allison nodded, wrapping her arm around her mother’s shoulders. ""He’s finding the ground.""
