Chapter 2: The Harvest of Shadows

The paper rested on the table like an unexploded shell.

""What is this?"" Bradley stammered, his fingers twitching against the metal table railing. ""I am her eldest son! I am her legal guardian!""

Allison stepped closer, her heels clicking with absolute precision against the linoleum.

""You were her guardian until twelve hours ago, Bradley,"" Allison said, her dark eyes cutting through him with surgical clarity. ""Until my forensic team audited the clinical authorization logs at St. Luke's.""

She tapped the second page of the court order.

""This is not an emergency cardiovascular surgery, Bradley. This is a private protocol enrollment for BioGenix Therapeutics—a proprietary clinical trial that requires harvesting bone marrow and neural stem cell tissue from non-consenting geriatric patients under the guise of an emergency bypass.""

Dr. Evans’s leather binder slipped from his hands, striking the floor with a loud slap. He backed toward the door, his eyes darting frantically toward the hallway where two federal marshals in plain clothes were already stepping through the entrance.

""The hospital received a four-million-dollar offshore research grant from a Cayman Islands shell corporation last month,"" Mei Chen continued, presenting the certified wire manifests. ""And seventy-five thousand dollars was deposited directly into an account registered under your name, Bradley, to cover your delinquent sports car notes and gambling debts in Atlantic City.""

From the bed, Evelyn stirred weakly, her eyelashes fluttering against her pale cheeks. ""Allison...?""

Allison’s face instantly softened. The fierce, unyielding corporate attorney dissolved as she rushed to the bedside, kneeling on the cold floor and taking her mother’s frail, cool hand in both of hers.

""I’m here, Mom,"" Allison whispered, pressing her lips against her mother’s knuckles. ""You're safe now. No one is taking you anywhere.""

Two federal marshals stepped into the room, their golden badges gleaming beneath the fluorescent tubes.

""Mr. Vance, Dr. Evans,"" the lead marshal said calmly. ""You are required to surrender your credentials and accompany us to the federal courthouse for questioning. Step away from the bed.""
