Chapter 4: The House on the Chesapeake
Three weeks later, the sterile hospital rooms and court subpoenas were replaced by the whispering tides of the Chesapeake Bay.
Perched on a low bluff of salt marsh and loblolly pines outside St. Michaels, Maryland, sat *The Heron’s Rest*—a historic two-story cedar-shingled farmhouse built in 1890. It was the home where Evelyn’s family had lived for four generations, surrounded by wild beach plum bushes, oyster shallows, and the endless cry of laughing gulls.
Evelyn sat on the screened-in back porch in an oversized wicker armchair, wrapped in a hand-knit wool blanket. Her cheeks, once grey and sunken, had begun to regain their natural rosy warmth from the clean salt air and home-cooked broths.
Sitting at the pine porch table beside her was Allison.
Allison had replaced her designer suits with a faded denim shirt, dark corduroy pants, and warm sheepskin slippers. Her laptop was open, but the screen was not displaying corporate mergers; she was reviewing legal documents to establish a non-profit conservatorship foundation for vulnerable senior citizens across Maryland.
Evelyn reached over, her hand resting gently on Allison’s wrist.
""You haven't checked your firm's email since Tuesday, Allison,"" Evelyn said, her voice soft and tender. ""Your partners in Chicago must be losing their minds.""
Allison closed the laptop with a quiet, decisive click.
""I resigned from the senior partnership yesterday, Mom,"" Allison smiled, reaching up to cover her mother’s hand.
Evelyn’s eyes widened with gentle concern. ""Allison, you worked for twelve years to make senior partner. That was your dream.""
