Chapter 9 - The Whispering Walls

The realization hit Elena like a physical blow, stealing the breath from her lungs. Every argument she and David had ever had in the kitchen, every quiet conversation in the master bedroom, every whispered secret traded in the dead of night—it had all been broadcasted downward into the dark.

"She listened to everything," Elena whispered, her hands trembling as she clutched the wool blanket tighter around her shoulders. "She knew our financial struggles before we even spoke them aloud. She engineered our debt so we would take the house."

Miller nodded grimly, pocketing the evidence bag. "The state attorney general is already fast-tracking asset seizure warrants for all three of Evelyn’s offshore accounts. But there’s a complication. David’s mother didn't act alone. We found financial transfers originating from a corporate shell company linked to a local real estate developer named Marcus Vance."

Elena frowned, struggling to reconcile the names. "Wait. You said Marcus was the older brother locked in the basement for twenty years. How could he own a shell company?"

"Because," a new voice interrupted from the shadows near the patio, "Marcus wasn't the older brother. Marcus was our father."

Elena spun around to see a young woman in her early twenties stepping out from behind a police cruiser. She had the same sharp, angular jawline as Evelyn, but her eyes were filled with sorrow rather than malice. She wore a heavy denim jacket and held a worn leather journal in her hands.

"Who are you?" Elena demanded, stepping defensively between the stranger and the ambulance where Toby sat.

"I’m Chloe," the young woman said softly, holding up her hands to show she meant no harm. "Evelyn Vance’s granddaughter. David’s niece. And the only person in this family who managed to escape before the chain was put around my neck."
