Chapter 8 - The Descent

The suburban night sky was illuminated by the harsh, flashing red and blue lights of half a dozen squad cars parked haphazardly across the pristine lawn of the Vance residence. Police tape fluttered in the cool evening breeze as Elena stood by the open door of an ambulance, wrapping a warm wool blanket around shivering Toby, who refused to let go of her waist.

"Mommy, are we ever going back inside?" Toby asked, his small voice muffled against her shoulder.

"Never, sweetie. I promise you, we are never coming back here," Elena whispered, kissing the top of his brown hair while her eyes drifted toward the open basement bulkhead doors near the back patio.

Detective Miller walked up to them, his boots crunching on the gravel path. His expression was pale, his usual professional composure visibly shaken. "Elena, you need to stay here with the medics. We found the stairs, but... you’re going to want to hear this from me first."

Elena gently untangled Toby’s arms, handing him over to a gentle-faced female paramedic before stepping toward Miller. "What did you find down there, Detective? Is my husband's brother still alive?"

"He’s alive," Miller said, swallowing hard as he wiped a bead of nervous sweat from his forehead. "At least, something human is alive down there. But the room isn't a prison cell, Elena. It’s a shrine. And there are photographs on the walls—hundreds of them—dating back thirty years."

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. "Photographs of whom?"

"Of families," Miller said quietly. "Previous owners of this house, real estate agents, contractors who did renovations over the decades. Every single one of them disappeared without a trace after buying this property from the Evelyn Vance estate trust."

Elena looked back toward the lit kitchen window, where the silhouette of the wooden pillar was faintly visible through the glass. "It’s a trap. The whole house was built as a trap to lure young couples with inheritance money."

"Worse than that," Miller corrected, holding up an evidence bag containing a heavy iron key with an old-fashioned brass bow. "We found this key hanging right behind the portrait in the front hallway, exactly like Toby said. And when we tested it on the master electrical panel, we found a hidden intercom system that connects every room in this house directly to the basement."
