Chapter 14 - The Final Bargain

The cold night air felt like glass in Elena’s lungs as she dropped to her knees on the gravel floor of the ambulance, clutching Toby’s torn t-shirt to her chest. The sirens of the police cruisers continued their silent, spinning dance overhead, but the absence of radio chatter and footsteps created an unnatural, suffocating vacuum.
"He’s gone," Chloe murmured, staring into the empty cabin with hollow eyes. "Grandma had an accomplice on the outside all along. Someone we didn't account for."
Detective Miller inspected the scattered caps on the gravel, his face grim as he checked the service holsters of his missing men. "They didn't just walk away. They were ambushed. Professional grade—sub-sonic sedatives."
A sudden, sharp chime echoed across the driveway, cutting through the silence. It wasn't a police radio or a cell phone ring. It was the antique intercom speaker mounted on the exterior brick wall of the house, crackling to life with a familiar, chillingly calm voice.
"Elena, David, and our esteemed guests," Evelyn’s amplified voice echoed smoothly across the property. "If you ever wish to see the boy draw another breath, bring the safe contents and the flash drive to the front porch immediately. You have three minutes before the timer expires."
Elena stood up slowly, her eyes burning with a fierce, unbreakable resolve. She looked at Miller, then at Chloe, who nodded with a grim, defiant expression.
"We aren't giving her the files," Elena said, her voice steady and resolute. "We’re going to end this tonight."

As they walked back toward the illuminated front porch of the house, the heavy wooden front door swung open on its own, revealing David standing in the doorway with his hands untied, holding the heavy iron padlock out toward them like an offering to a dark god.
