Chapter 3 - The Locked Basement

The mention of the basement door sent a shudder through Elena that she couldn't suppress. She had lived in this sprawling suburban home for four years, yet she had never once possessed the key to that heavy steel door. David had always brushed it off as a utility room housing old HVAC equipment and architectural blueprints.

"Open it," Elena demanded, pointing the glowing smartphone at Evelyn while keeping her finger poised on the police dispatch line. "Open that door right now, or I swear to God I will stream this entire house to every news outlet in the state."

Evelyn chuckled, a dry, humorless sound that chilled the morning air. "You think you have leverage, Elena? You think a smartphone camera is going to save you from generations of blood and iron?"

"Mom, please," David begged, his voice cracking into a desperate whine. "Don't bring the past into this. Elena is right, we need to let the police handle it. We can just tell them it was a misunderstanding, a cruel joke..."

"A joke?" Evelyn’s expression hardened instantly into a mask of pure malice. She dropped the butcher knife onto the kitchen island with a dull, heavy thud. "Nothing in this family is a joke. Your father understood that. That is why he left us this land, and that is why the trust fund is legally tied to my physical presence in this house until my dying breath."

Elena slowly lowered the phone by a fraction, her mind racing to connect the horrifying dots. "The inheritance. This isn't just about discipline or cruelty, is it? You're maintaining control of the estate, and Toby... Toby stumbled onto something he wasn't supposed to see."

"He saw his uncle," Evelyn said softly, stepping toward the hallway where little Toby was still softly whimpering. "He unlocked the wrong door yesterday afternoon. And once you see what lives down in the dark, you cannot simply unsee it."

David slammed his hand against the pantry door, his face turning an angry, desperate crimson. "He’s just a boy! He’s seven years old, Mom! You can’t keep him down there with—"

Before David could finish his sentence, a heavy, muffled thud echoed from deep beneath the kitchen floorboards, shaking the very tiles they stood on.
