Chapter 6 - The Confession Room

The sterile, fluorescent lighting of the local police precinct interrogation room hummed a monotonous tune that grated on Elena’s already frayed nerves. She sat at the metal table, her beige silk blouse stained with dust and tears, staring blankly at the two styrofoam cups of coffee sitting untouched between her and Detective Miller.
Detective Miller, a tired-looking man with salt-and-pepper hair and sharp, analytical eyes, closed the manila folder in front of him with a soft thud. "Mrs. Vance, your mother-in-law is not talking. She invoked her right to counsel immediately, and her lawyer is already en route. But that’s not why you’re in here."
Elena looked up, her bloodshot eyes narrowing slightly. "Then why am I in here? My son was chained to a post in our own house. Shouldn't I be taking him home?"
"Child Protective Services has temporary custody of Toby while the medical evaluation is completed," Miller said gently, though his tone brooked no argument. "He’s physically stable, just dehydrated and shaken up. But the social workers found historical markers on his medical files from the last two years. Unexplained fractures, frequent emergency visits under different Urgent Cares."
Elena’s jaw dropped, her breath catching in her throat. "No. That’s impossible. Toby’s only broken his arm once, on the playground in kindergarten! I was there!"
"According to the centralized health registry, he was treated for a hairline collarbone fracture six months ago at a clinic forty miles away," Miller countered, sliding a printed document across the table. "You were listed as the consenting parent on the intake form, Elena. Signed in your handwriting."
Elena stared at the document, the world spinning around her. The signature looked identical to hers—every loop and cross of the pen mirrored her own hand. But she had never taken Toby to that clinic. She had never authorized any treatment.
"David," Elena whispered, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. "David must have... he used my signature, or forged it."

"Your husband is currently being interviewed in the next room," Miller said, leaning forward and resting his forearms on the table. "And he just told us something very interesting about that locked door in your basement. He says your name is on the deed to the property, which means legally, you share liability for whatever is locked behind it."
