Chapter 5 - Sirens in the Driveway

"Police! Drop whatever you're holding! Hands where we can see them!" shouted the lead officer, a burly sergeant with a stern, weathered face and a tactical vest bearing bold reflective lettering.
Elena froze instantly, the heavy bolt cutters clattering heavily onto the concrete garage floor. She raised her hands high above her head, her breath hitching in her throat as the harsh beams of tactical flashlights swept across the kitchen and into the hallway.
"In here! In the kitchen!" Elena cried out, stepping forward into the doorway. "My son is chained! There’s an elderly woman—she’s dangerous, she has a knife—"
David appeared from the hallway, still holding trembling Toby, whose little blue t-shirt was stained with dirt and tears. The heavy metal chain was still securely padlocked around the boy's slender neck, dragging sluggishly across the linoleum floor. The sight of the chained child caused the seasoned police officers to instantly lower their stances into defensive postures, their hands tightening on their sidearms.
"Officer, thank God," David stammered, his voice breaking as he shielded Toby with his own body. "It’s my mother. She lost her mind. She locked him up."
The sergeant stepped past Elena, his eyes locked on the horrifying tableau in the hallway. He barked orders into his shoulder radio, calling for paramedics and backup immediately. "Clear the perimeter! Check all exits! Ma'am, step away from the kitchen island with your hands where I can see them!" he yelled toward Evelyn.
Evelyn didn't move. She stood beside the pantry door, her expression returning to that eerie, unbothered composure. She slowly raised her hands, not in surrender, but with the posture of a queen granting an audience to her subjects.
"You're making a terrible mistake, officer," Evelyn said smoothly, her voice carrying an uncanny authority that made the police sergeant hesitate for a fraction of a second. "This house is private property, and the boy is being disciplined according to the ancient bylaws of this estate."
"Save the speech for the judge, lady. Turn around and put your hands behind your back," the sergeant ordered, stepping forward with zip-ties ready.

As the officer clicked the plastic restraints around Evelyn’s wrists, she didn't resist. Instead, she turned her head and looked directly into Elena’s eyes, whispering something silent that sent an immediate shiver down Elena's spine: You found the key, but you opened the wrong cage.
