Chapter 2 - The Cold Inheritance

Evelyn’s entry into the kitchen brought an unnatural drop in temperature, the ambient hum of the refrigerator suddenly sounding deafening. She held the heavy chef’s knife with an effortless, practiced casualness, her beige blouse unwrinkled and her grey hair neatly pinned. She didn't look like a deranged captor; she looked like a grandmother preparing Sunday roast.

"Put the phone down, Elena," Evelyn said, her voice eerily calm, devoid of any tremor or remorse. "The police will only find what I want them to find. And trust me, you cannot afford for them to look too closely at the foundation of this house."

Elena shielded the glowing phone screen against her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "You are insane. You locked Toby up. I saw him. The lock, the chain, the bowl—I saw all of it!"

"Discipline is a lost art in this fragile generation," Evelyn replied smoothly, stepping closer while the blade caught the overhead recessed lighting. "David knows discipline. That is why he survived his childhood. That is why he owns this house, why he has his career. I built him."

David shrank back further, pressing his spine against the pantry door. "Mom, stop it. Just put the knife down. The cops are already on their way, Elena called them."

Evelyn stopped, her cold eyes shifting slowly toward her son. A cruel, disappointed smirk touched the corners of her mouth. "You called the police, David? Or did you just stand there like a useless coward, exactly as you did twenty years ago in the basement?"

Elena’s blood ran cold. She stared at David, who suddenly looked like a terrified child trapped in a man's body. "What basement, David? What is she talking about?"

David looked away, his jaw trembling as he swallowed hard. "Nothing. She’s lying. She’s just trying to manipulate us."

"Am I?" Evelyn tilted her head, her gaze piercing right through David’s flimsy denial. "Tell your wife about your older brother, David. Tell her why room number three in the basement has a reinforced steel door and a biometric lock that only I can open."
