Chapter 8 - Echoes of the Past

The revelation hit Detective Miller like a physical blow. She stared across the table at Julian, whose eyes gleamed with a malicious, calculating triumph. He had played his final card, shifting the suspicion back onto Elena with a chilling accusation that threatened to unravel the entire investigation.

"What did you just say?" Detective Miller asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy whisper.

"You heard me," Julian smiled faintly, leaning back in his chair with an air of absolute defiance. "Elena isn't the victim here. She’s a professional black widow. I figured it out two years into our marriage when I found her first husband's medical files hidden in the attic. He didn't die of a sudden heart attack. He was poisoned slowly with heavy metals over a period of six months."

Detective Miller stood up abruptly, knocking her chair backward against the linoleum floor, and stormed out of the interrogation room without uttering another word. She headed straight down the sterile hallway to the observation room, where another investigator was monitoring Elena in the adjacent holding cell.

"Pull the file on Daniel Hayes," Detective Miller commanded the officer at the console, her hands trembling slightly with adrenaline. "The accidental death from five years ago in Boston. I want every single autopsy report, toxicology screen, and insurance payout record on my desk in ten minutes."

Inside the holding cell, Elena sat with her head resting in her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent, exhausted sobs. The door creaked open, and Detective Miller walked in, standing silently over her for a long moment before speaking.

"Your husband just gave us a very interesting piece of information about your past, Elena," Detective Miller said, her voice devoid of any warmth. "He says your first husband didn't die of natural causes. He claims you poisoned him for his life insurance payout."

Elena slowly lifted her head, her eyes red-rimmed and swollen from crying, but her expression wasn't one of guilt. It was an expression of pure, unadulterated horror.

"He told you that?" Elena whispered, her voice cracking painfully. "Julian... Julian is the one who found those files. He’s the one who blackmailed me with them from the very beginning of our marriage."

Detective Miller froze, her hand hovering over her notepad as a chilling realization began to take root in her mind.

"What are you talking about?" the detective demanded.

"I didn't kill my first husband," Elena said, grabbing the edge of the table as tears streamed down her cheeks. "Julian was his business partner. Julian is the one who administered the poison. And when I found out, he threatened to frame me for it if I ever tried to leave him or tell the police."
