Chapter 11 - The Confrontation at Dawn

The morning sun cast a pale, golden glow over the county jail as Detective Miller walked briskly down the concrete corridor toward the high-security holding cells. In her hand, she carried the digital recorder containing Martha Vance’s full, unedited testimony, along with the newly recovered financial records linking Arthur Vance and Julian to the offshore accounts. She stopped in front of Cell Block B, where Julian sat alone on a steel bench, staring blankly at the opposite wall with a cold, unyielding expression.

The heavy metal door buzzed open, and Detective Miller stepped inside, the sound of her heels echoing sharply off the cinderblock walls.

"Your attorney tried to disconnect your mother's life support system in the ICU last night, Julian," Detective Miller stated bluntly, tossing a thick manila file onto the stainless-steel table between them.

Julian didn't flinch. He didn't even turn his head to look at the file. He simply let out a low, humorless chuckle and looked up with a chilling, predatory smile.

"Arthur is a fool who panicked," Julian said smoothly, resting his elbows on his knees and lacing his cuffed fingers together. "He acted entirely on his own accord. You have no direct evidence connecting me to that hospital room."

"Perhaps not to the hospital room," Detective Miller replied, leaning forward with an unwavering gaze. "But we do have a full confession from your mother regarding the murder of Daniel Hayes five years ago. And we have the digital forensics report proving that you executed the fraudulent power of attorney using your own personal IP address."

Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a muscle in his cheek twitching violently before he forced his composure back into place.

"My mother is suffering from late-stage vascular dementia," Julian countered, his voice dripping with venom. "Anything she says in a hospital bed is legally inadmissible due to cognitive impairment. Any defense attorney worth his salt will tear your case apart in five minutes."

"She had a lucid interval last night, Julian," the detective said quietly, pressing play on the digital recorder resting on the table.

Martha Vance’s voice filled the small cell, clear, strong, and unmistakably coherent, detailing every single crime Julian had committed over the past decade, culminating in the poisoning of Daniel Hayes and the systematic abuse of Elena.

As the recording echoed off the concrete walls, the color drained completely from Julian's face, leaving him looking older, defeated, and utterly trapped.

"You can't prove any of this," Julian whispered, his voice trembling as he stared down at the table.

"We don't need to prove it to you, Julian," Detective Miller said, turning off the recorder and standing up. "We just need to present it to a jury. And right now, your wife is waiting in the next room, ready to sign the final deposition that seals your fate forever."
