Chapter 2 - The Locker Room Discovery

The cold realization hit Elena with the force of a physical blow as she stared at the empty velvet box in her husband's hand. The country club locker. She had thought the combination was completely secure, known only to her and the front desk staff. How on earth had Julian managed to access it without her knowledge? The silence in the living room grew suffocatingly dense, broken only by the low, steady hum of the refrigerator and the distant wail of a siren approaching from the main boulevard outside.
"I didn't put it there," Elena whispered, her voice shaking violently as she tried to shift her weight, only to wince as a jagged piece of glass bit deeper into her flesh. "Someone else must have used a master key. You know how careless the club management is with security."
Julian let out a harsh, bitter laugh that held no humor whatsoever. He snapped the velvet box shut with a sharp click that echoed loudly off the high vaulted ceilings.
"Stop lying, Elena," Julian said, his eyes narrowing into cold slits as the first police officer reached down and grabbed his wrist, pulling him back slightly to secure the crime scene. "You’ve been draining my mother’s trust fund for the past eight months to pay off your mounting gambling debts in the city. The bank statements were delivered to my office this morning by mistake."
Elena felt the blood drain entirely from her face, leaving her skin ghostly pale beneath the harsh overhead lights. The gambling debts. She had thought she was so careful, routing the online transfers through offshore accounts and deleting every notification the second it arrived on her phone.
"That's a complete fabrication," Elena protested, though her voice lacked any real conviction now. "Your mother agreed to help me invest in the boutique. She wanted me to have financial independence."
"My mother has advanced vascular dementia, Elena," Julian shouted, his composure finally shattering completely as he pointed a trembling finger at the wheelchair now disappearing down the hall. "She doesn't even remember what day of the week it is, let alone sign off on high-risk venture capital loans!"
The senior police officer stepped directly between Julian and the wreckage, flashing a gold badge and gesturing sharply for backup to secure the perimeter.
"Sir, you need to step back into the foyer right now and let us handle the investigation," the officer ordered calmly.

Elena watched through a blur of unshed tears as Julian turned his back on her, walking away without a single backward glance. But right before he stepped out of view, his eyes darted toward the dark hallway, revealing a hidden panic that wasn't about his mother at all.
