Chapter 3 - The Hidden Ledger

The harsh glare of the interrogation room lights made Elena’s throbbing headache spike into a blinding agony. She sat hunched over the stainless-steel table, her green satin shirt now ruined, stained permanently with yellow turmeric and smeared paprika. The heavy brass candle holder, the catalyst for the entire disaster, sat bagged in clear plastic on the opposite side of the table as silent, damning evidence. The door swung open with a heavy metallic click, and a female detective with sharp gray eyes and a tailored charcoal suit walked in, dropping a thick manila folder onto the surface.

"Let's go over the financial records one more time, Mrs. Vance," the detective said, pulling out a metal chair and sitting down with deliberate slowness. "Because the signature on these wire transfers doesn't match your mother-in-law's handwriting. In fact, it doesn't match yours either."

Elena kept her gaze fixed on her own bruised hands, refusing to look up at the investigator. Her mind raced wildly, trying to construct a narrative that could salvage whatever was left of her life and her marriage.

"People make mistakes under extreme pressure," Elena murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. "Julian works all the time. He neglects me. I felt invisible, so I looked for a way to feel in control of something, anything."

"Stealing nearly two hundred thousand dollars isn't a cry for attention, Mrs. Vance; it's grand larceny," the detective replied, flipping open the folder to reveal a series of printed bank logs. "And what makes this case particularly interesting is that the funds weren't just going to your personal accounts. They were being funneled into a shell corporation registered under a completely different name."

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. She had thought the offshore routing was completely untraceable.

"I don't know anything about a shell corporation," Elena lied, though her voice faltered on the final syllable.

"Really?" the detective asked, raising a single eyebrow and sliding a photograph across the table. "Because the address listed for that corporation is a storage unit located only three miles from your home. And the primary key holder listed on the rental agreement is none other than your loving husband, Julian."

The room seemed to spin on its axis. Julian? The storage unit belonged to Julian? Elena stared down at the glossy photograph of a gray metal roll-up door, her mind desperately trying to connect the dots of a puzzle she suddenly realized she had never been allowed to solve.

"He... he lied to me," Elena breathed out, the words escaping her lips before she could stop them.

"Or perhaps," the detective said, leaning forward across the table with a predatory smile, "you were both partners in crime until one of you decided to keep all the money for yourself."
