Chapter 1 - The Shattered Silence

The modern kitchen floor glistened under the glaring recessed lights, slick with a fine orange and yellow powder of crushed turmeric, paprika, and dried rosemary. Elena pressed her back hard against the splintered pine of the collapsed shelving unit, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. Shards of thick glass dug sharply into her shoulders through the emerald green satin of her button-up shirt, but she barely felt the physical pain. Her eyes remained locked on the doorway where two uniformed police officers stood, their hands resting heavily on the holstered weapons at their belts. Julian stood a few feet away, his chest heaving beneath his crisp white dress shirt as he pointed an accusing finger straight at her face.

"Don't you dare lie to me!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking with a raw fury that Elena had never heard in the six years of their marriage.

Elena lifted her trembling hands, palms facing outward, her light blonde hair escaping its neat ponytail to cling to her sweaty forehead.

"Julian, you don't understand what she was doing!" Elena cried out, her voice pitching high with panic. "She took my mother’s pearl necklace! She hides things in that wheelchair just to torment me!"

In the corner near the granite island, the elderly woman with short white hair sat rigidly in her blue medical chair. A young female caregiver had her hands firmly on the push handles, wheeling her slowly toward the safety of the hallway. The older woman did not look back, her posture defensive and entirely silent.

"Put it down! You were going to strike her with that heavy brass candle holder!" Julian yelled back, his face flushing a deep, angry crimson as he took a menacing step closer to the wreckage.

"I was only trying to scare her into giving it back!" Elena sobbed, her fingers brushing against a particularly sharp piece of glass resting right against her thigh.

"Ma'am, stay exactly where you are and keep your hands where we can see them," the taller of the two police officers commanded, stepping firmly over the threshold with heavy boots crunching on the spilled spices.

Julian did not look down at his wife. Instead, he pulled a black leather bag from his shoulder, unzipped it with one swift motion, and extracted a small velvet jewelry box. He popped the lid open to reveal an empty satin bed.

"Are you looking for this, Elena?" Julian asked, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly quiet register. "Because I found it tucked deep inside your private gym locker at the country club this afternoon."
