Chapter 6 - The Highway Interception

The midnight air on the interstate was biting cold, but Julian felt beads of sweat rolling down the back of his neck as the flashing red and blue lights of three state patrol cruisers painted the interior of his sedan in stark, violent hues. He gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned translucent. Through the rearview mirror, he could see an officer with a drawn service weapon stepping out of a cruiser, shouting orders through a bullhorn to turn off the engine and place his hands visibly on the dashboard.

Julian slowly released the ignition, his mind racing at a frantic pace. The plan had been foolproof. Liquidate the remaining assets, blame Elena for the entire embezzlement scheme, institutionalize his mother for her own protection, and start a new life overseas with Sarah. But Sarah had gotten greedy. She had demanded a larger cut, threatened to go to the police herself if he didn't hand over the cash immediately, and forced him to take drastic action.

"Driver, step out of the vehicle slowly with your hands behind your head!" a booming voice echoed from the loudspeaker outside.

Julian pushed the door open and stepped out onto the damp asphalt, the bitter wind instantly chilling the sweat on his skin. He raised his hands, his white dress shirt stained with grease from popping the trunk earlier. Two officers rushed forward, slamming him forcefully against the side of his car and patting him down with practiced efficiency before slapping cold steel cuffs onto his wrists.

"You're making a massive mistake," Julian spat out as they shoved him toward the rear of the sedan. "I am the victim here! My wife attacked my elderly mother with a candle holder!"

"Save it for the judge, Mr. Vance," the senior state trooper replied coldly, gesturing to another officer to pop the trunk release latch from inside the vehicle.

The heavy metal trunk lid lifted slowly with a pneumatic hiss. Inside, bound tightly with industrial zip-ties and gagged with heavy duct tape, Sarah Jenkins lay shivering violently, her eyes wide with stark terror in the pale glow of the trunk light.

"Clear!" the inspecting officer shouted, instantly cutting the zip-ties around Sarah's wrists and helping her sit up. "She's hypothermic and dehydrated, but she's breathing."

Sarah gasped for air as the tape was ripped away from her mouth, coughing violently before pointing a trembling, accusing finger straight at Julian standing three feet away.

"He did it," Sarah rasped out, her voice raw and cracking with emotion. "He forced me to help him embezzle the funds, and when I tried to back out today, he threw me in the trunk and tried to bury me alive!"

Julian froze, the last vestige of his carefully constructed defense evaporating into the freezing night air. But even as the cuffs locked tight around his wrists, a chilling, triumphant smirk crept slowly across his face.
