Chapter 12 - The Final Deposition

The consultation room at the county precinct was quiet, bathed in the soft, natural light of early morning streaming through a high, barred window. Elena sat at the wooden table, wearing a simple gray sweatshirt provided by the station staff, her hair tied back in a clean, loose braid. Her hands were steady as she held a black ink pen over the final page of a comprehensive legal deposition detailing every aspect of Julian’s systematic psychological abuse and financial coercion.
The door opened softly, and Detective Miller walked in, holding a small paper cup of hot coffee, which she set down gently near Elena's elbow.
"Are you ready to finish this, Elena?" Detective Miller asked softly, pulling out a chair and sitting down across from her.
Elena looked down at the signature line, her mind flashing back to the shattered glass, the spilled spices, and the terrifying look in Julian’s eyes when he realized his empire of lies had finally crumbled. She took a deep, grounding breath, feeling a profound sense of release she hadn't experienced in years.
"I am," Elena whispered, her voice steady and resolute.
She lowered the pen and signed her name with clear, bold strokes across the official document, officially cutting the final legal tie binding her to a man who had tried to destroy her soul.
"What happens to him now?" Elena asked, looking up to meet the detective's eyes.
"With your deposition, your mother-in-law's testimony, and Sarah Jenkins' full cooperation, the District Attorney is filing multiple felony charges including first-degree murder, kidnapping, grand larceny, and conspiracy," Detective Miller answered firmly. "He's not going to see the outside of a maximum-security prison for the rest of his life."
Elena nodded slowly, a small, genuine smile finally breaking through the heavy exhaustion that had weighed her down for so long.
"And what about me?" Elena asked quietly. "The embezzlement charges..."
"The D.A. has agreed to drop all criminal charges against you, recognizing that you were acting under severe duress and constant blackmail," Detective Miller assured her with a reassuring nod. "You are officially a free woman, Elena."

Elena let out a long, shuddering breath, feeling as though an invisible mountain had been lifted entirely from her shoulders. But just as she stood up to leave the room, the precinct's main emergency phone began ringing incessantly down the hall, followed by a loud shout from the front desk that made both women freeze in their tracks.
