Chapter 8 - Shattered Glass

The thunderous crash of the front windows exploding inward sent shards of colored stained glass raining down across the marble floor like lethal jewels. Clara screamed, instinctively throwing her entire body over little Lily to shield the child from the sparkling shrapnel. Julian dove to the left, rolling behind the heavy mahogany console table just as a deafening volley of automatic gunfire ripped through the foyer from the front courtyard. Marcus stumbled backward, dropping his silver revolver as a bullet grazed his trench coat sleeve, shattering the leather briefcase against the marble stairs.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapons!" a booming voice echoed through the shattered front frame through a megaphone.
Victoria shrieked in absolute terror, her calculated composure instantly shattering as she scrambled on all fours toward the safety of the parlor, her white silk shirt stained with dust and tiny spots of blood from a stray glass shard. Smoke and tear gas canisters rolled across the shattered threshold, hissing violently as thick, acrid white plumes began to fill the cavernous foyer, burning the eyes and lungs of everyone inside.
"Clear the room! Move, move, move!" tactical officers in heavy black body armor surged through the broken windows, their assault rifles raised and laser sights painting the swirling smoke with crimson lines.
Julian scrambled out from behind the console table, coughing violently as he waved his hand through the chemical smoke to signal the advancing team. "Over here! My daughter is injured! She needs medical evacuation immediately!"
Two paramedics in biohazard gear rushed past the tactical squad, heading straight for the stairs where Clara was huddled protectively over Lily. Clara coughed into her apron, her bruised forehead bleeding again where a piece of flying glass had grazed her skin, but she held onto the little girl with fierce, unwavering determination.
"I've got her, ma'am, let us take her," a paramedic gently instructed, lifting Lily into a specialized rescue harness and strapping an oxygen mask over her face.
Marcus tried to crawl toward the basement stairwell, clutching his bleeding arm, but two tactical officers pounced on him instantly, slamming his face against the floor and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with brutal efficiency.
"Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy, extortion, and the unlawful tampering of interstate federal evidence," an officer barked, hauling the struggling man to his feet and dragging him toward the ruined doorway.
Victoria tried to slip out through the back parlor service door, her high heels clicking frantically against the hardwood floor, but the heavy oak paneling suddenly swung open to block her path. A tall, stern-looking female investigator in a sharp grey trench coat stepped out from the shadows of the hallway, holding an open federal warrant and a pair of pristine steel cuffs.
"Victoria Vance, you have the right to remain silent," the investigator said coldly, stepping forward to grab Victoria by both shoulders.
May you like
Victoria glared at the investigator with pure hatred, her diamond necklace glittering in the harsh strobe lights of the police cruisers outside. "You can arrest me all you want, but you will never find the safe where the real truth is buried."
