Chapter 5 - The Locked Exit

The heavy thud of the oak door slamming shut vibrated through the marble foyer, sending a shiver down Clara’s spine. She stood frozen near the threshold with Lily clutched tightly in her arms, the young girl's breathing growing ragged again from the sudden spike in tension. Julian turned slowly on the stairs, his tall frame tensing as he realized Victoria had just trapped them inside the mansion. The air in the foyer grew thick and oppressive, smelling faintly of old polish and impending disaster.

"Open this door right now, Victoria," Julian commanded, his voice dropping an octave as he descended the remaining steps with measured, predatory grace.

"I told you, Julian, we protect our family secrets first," Victoria replied, her voice disturbingly calm as she smoothed down the front of her white silk shirt. "Clara is forgetting her place, trying to incite rebellion among the staff and meddling in private family affairs. If she leaves this house right now with that child, she will run straight to the local authorities with fabricated stories of abuse, and our entire lives will be torn apart by a media circus."

"Abuse? Fabricated?" Clara shouted, her voice cracking with righteous fury as she took a defiant step forward despite her fear. "I have photographs! I have audio recordings on my personal tablet hidden in the attic! I have kept a detailed journal of every single time you locked that little girl in the dark, starved her for twenty-four hours, and burned her arms with hot tea!"

Victoria’s eyes flashed with murderous intent, her carefully maintained mask slipping for a fraction of a second to reveal the desperate predator underneath. She stepped toward Clara, raising her hand as if to strike the maid across the face again.

"You lying, ungrateful little trash," Victoria hissed, lunging forward with bared teeth.

Julian’s hand shot out like a striking viper, catching Victoria’s wrist mid-air with a grip of iron. He yanked her arm back so hard that the heavy diamond necklace around her throat twisted sharply against her pale skin. Victoria gasped, her eyes widening in shock as she looked up into Julian’s face, which was now completely devoid of any warmth or marital affection.

"If even a fraction of what Clara just said is true," Julian whispered, his face inches from Victoria's, "you will pray for a quick death by the time I am finished with you."

Victoria forced a shaky, hysterical laugh, struggling against his grip while keeping her chin held high. "Go ahead, Julian! Search the nursery! Search the secret safe! But when you open it, you will find out what Sarah was really doing on the night her car went off the cliff—because I didn't cut her brake lines alone."

Julian froze, his fingers instantly loosening their grip on Victoria's wrist as the terrible confession hung heavily in the air. Clara gasped, her knees nearly buckling under the sheer weight of the horror unfolding before them.

"What did you say?" Julian breathed, the color draining entirely from his face.

Before Victoria could answer, the security intercom on the foyer wall crackled to life with a loud, piercing static hiss, followed by the sound of heavy boots kicking against the back service entrance.
