Chapter 14 - The Final Reckoning

The heavy steel-bladed knife whistled through the air with lethal precision. Pendelton reacted a fraction of a second too late, twisting his torso to the side just as the blade buried itself deep into the shoulder of his charcoal suit with a sickening crunch. The lawyer screamed in pain, dropping his silenced pistol as he stumbled backward against the concrete wall, clutching his bleeding shoulder with his opposite hand.

"Now, Clara! Move!" Julian yelled, dropping down from the ventilation junction box into the maintenance corridor with a heavy thud.

Clara scrambled after him, dropping down beside him just as Pendelton reached down with his left hand to grab a heavy iron wrench lying on the maintenance table. "Mr. Vance! Thank God you're safe," the investigator called out, flanked by two tactical officers. "We secured the perimeter, and your brother Marcus just signed a full confession implicating Pendelton and your wife in both the corporate embezzlement and the deliberate poisoning of your first wife."

Julian closed his eyes for a brief moment, letting the heavy burden of the past five years finally lift from his shoulders. He looked over at Clara, who stood blinking in the bright sunlight, her bruised forehead and torn maid uniform a testament to the sheer resilience and courage she had shown throughout the nightmare.

"And my daughter?" Julian asked, his voice trembling slightly.
