Chapter 6 - The Breach at the Back Gate

The sharp, metallic shriek of the security intercom pierced the heavy silence of the foyer, making everyone jump. The automated voice of the estate’s perimeter system droned monotonously from the speaker grid: Warning. Unauthorized biometric override detected at Service Gate Four. Julian slowly released Victoria’s wrist, his dark eyes never leaving her face as the horrifying implications of her previous confession settled over his mind like a physical weight. Clara took advantage of the distraction, backing away toward the curved staircase while keeping Lily safely tucked against her shoulder.

"Gate Four," Julian muttered, his voice dropping into a harsh rasp. "That leads directly to the subterranean utility tunnels beneath the wine cellar."

Victoria smirked, rubbing her bruised wrist while adjusting the collar of her white silk shirt with trembling fingers. "You thought you were the only one who installed monitoring devices in this house, Julian? I knew about the smart-home hub on day one. I also knew you kept a duplicate set of corporate files hidden down in the archives—files that would prove Blackwood Enterprises was built on embezzlement and forged land titles."

"You invited someone into the estate," Julian stated, his tall frame tensing as he stepped away from her toward the heavy mahogany parlor doors.

"I didn't invite them; I hired them," Victoria corrected smoothly, her eyes gleaming with dark triumph. "If you ruin me, Julian, everything goes down. Every offshore account, every hidden asset, and every secret regarding Sarah’s fatal accident goes straight to the federal prosecutors within the hour."

Clara watched them both with mounting terror, realizing that she and little Lily were trapped in the crossfire of a ruthless corporate and domestic war. The sound of heavy footsteps echoing up from the basement stairwell grew louder, rhythmic and purposeful, vibrating through the antique floorboards. Someone was moving through the subterranean tunnels, bypassing the estate's main security grid with insider access. Julian’s hand slipped inside the pocket of his black coat, his fingers wrapping around the cold steel grip of a concealed firearm that Victoria had never known he carried.

"Who is coming up from the cellars, Victoria?" Julian demanded, leveling his gaze at her with lethal intent.

"A man who has more right to Blackwood Estate than either of us," Victoria whispered, stepping back toward the shadows of the parlor entrance.

Before Julian could raise his weapon, the heavy cast-iron door leading down to the basement kitchens blew inward with a deafening crash of splintered wood and flying iron bolts. A tall, broad-shouldered man in a tattered trench coat stepped out of the stairwell shadows, coughing as he wiped a layer of thick basement dust from his face. He held a heavy leather briefcase in one hand and a silver revolver in the other, his cold, piercing blue eyes instantly locking onto Julian Vance.

"Hello, brother," Marcus Vance said, flashing a cruel, familiar grin. "Did you really think you could bury the past beneath five feet of concrete and a locked door?"
