Chapter 7 - The Prodigal Brother

The name hung in the damp foyer air like the tolling of a funeral bell. Brother. Julian’s posture locked into a rigid, defensive stance, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the concealed firearm inside his coat pocket. Marcus Vance stepped fully out of the dim stairwell, his trench coat stained with fresh mud and old lime, carrying the unmistakable aura of a man who had spent years plotting his triumphant return from social exile. Victoria watched them both with a cool, detached amusement, her hand resting lightly on the brass handle of the parlor door.

"Marcus," Julian spat out the name like it was poisoned ash on his tongue. "You were supposed to be dead in South America. The federal warrants—"

"Were quietly dismissed six months ago, thanks to a very cooperative partner," Marcus interrupted, casting a warm, conspiratorial glance toward Victoria. "Isn't that right, Vicky? Great minds think alike when it comes to dismantling a tyrant."

"You conspired with him?" Julian turned his head sharply toward his wife, his dark eyes flashing with absolute betrayal. "You brought my fugitive brother back into this house while my daughter was suffocating upstairs?"

"I brought the only man who possesses the original architectural blueprints of this estate," Victoria retorted sharply, her voice devoid of any lingering fear. "Marcus built the panic room, Julian. He knows every hidden cavity, every wiretap, and every dark secret you tried to erase when you seized total control of the family empire after our father died."

Clara shrank back against the base of the grand staircase, desperately shielding Lily’s face from the escalating violence. The little girl groaned weakly, her small hands clutching at Clara’s dark maid uniform as the raised voices echoed off the marble walls. Clara looked frantically around the foyer for another exit, but every window on the ground floor was reinforced with heavy wrought-iron security bars, and the front door remained securely deadbolted by the gold keys resting safely inside Victoria’s pocket.

"Drop the gun, Julian," Marcus commanded, raising his silver revolver and pointing it squarely at his brother's chest. "You've played the grieving widower and the ruthless corporate titan for long enough. Hand over the master estate keys, sign the transfer papers in my briefcase, and maybe I'll let you walk out of here alive with your brat and your corrupt maid."

Julian did not flinch. Instead, a grim, humorless smile touched the corners of his mouth as he slowly pulled his hand out of his black coat, revealing not a firearm, but a small, heavy digital recorder flashing a blinking red light.

"You always were arrogant, Marcus," Julian said softly, his voice echoing cleanly through the foyer. "Every word you just spoke, including your confession regarding the federal collusion and the tampering of Sarah's car, has been broadcasting live to the Internal Affairs division downtown for the last three minutes."

Marcus’s confident smirk vanished instantly, his blue eyes widening in sudden, panicked fury as he pulled the hammer of his revolver back with a sharp, metallic click.

"You lying bastard," Marcus snarled, his finger tightening against the trigger.

Before Marcus could pull the trigger, the front stained-glass windows of the foyer shattered inward in a deafening explosion of flying colored glass and splintered wood.
