Chapter 10 - Beneath the Floorboards

The descent into the sub-basement felt like walking into the tomb of a forgotten dynasty. Thick, damp air clung to their skin, carrying the metallic scent of rust and old earth. Julian led the way with a tactical flashlight, its bright white beam cutting through the swirling dust motes and illuminating the rough-hewn stone walls that Marcus had secretly poured over a decade ago. Clara followed closely behind, her footsteps echoing softly against the concrete floor until they reached the end of the narrow corridor, where a heavy, unpainted steel door blocked their path.

"This is it," Clara whispered, shining her own phone light against the rusted surface of the metal barrier. "Victoria called it the Vault of Record. She said it held the proof that could destroy both you and your brother in one stroke."

Julian stepped up to the door and examined the complex, antique locking mechanism. It wasn't a modern digital keypad or a standard deadbolt; it was a heavy, five-lever brass mortise lock identical to the one on the upstairs panic room, requiring a very specific sequence of turns with an old-fashioned key. He pulled the bunch of gold keys from his pocket, sorting through them until his fingers brushed against a heavy, cold piece of bronze marked with a faded letter B.

"Do you think she kept copies of Sarah's medical files down here?" Julian asked, his voice cracking slightly as the weight of his first wife's tragic memory pressed down on him.

"I think she kept everything, Mr. Vance," Clara replied softly. "Every lie, every forged document, and every secret that bought her five years of luxury in your house."

Julian slid the heavy bronze key into the keyhole. It fit with a satisfying, precise click. He turned it once to the left, feeling the heavy internal tumblers shift into place, then twice to the right until a loud, pneumatic hiss signaled the release of the industrial airtight seal. With a firm push, the heavy steel door swung inward, revealing a small, brightly lit concrete chamber lined with rows of filing cabinets, digital hard drives, and a large, open leather ledger resting on a mahogany desk in the center of the room.

"Look at that," Clara breathed, stepping past Julian into the bright room.

Julian followed her inside, his eyes scanning the shelves until they locked onto a framed photograph sitting prominently on top of the central desk. It was an old polaroid of Victoria standing side-by-side with Marcus Vance, smiling warmly in front of Blackwood Estate, dated two full years before Julian had even met Victoria at a charity gala in New York.

"They weren't strangers who met by chance," Julian whispered, the horrifying realization washing over him like ice water. "They planned the entire takeover of Blackwood Enterprises before Sarah even died."

Clara walked over to the mahogany desk and opened the leather ledger to the bookmarked page, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief as she read the handwritten entries detailing the systematic poisoning of Sarah Vance through her daily medication.

"Mr. Vance," Clara choked out, her hands shaking as she held up a small, empty amber vial labeled Potassium Cyanide - Batch 404. "They didn't just tamper with her car... they were poisoning her months before the crash."

Julian froze, staring at the vial in Clara's hand as the full, devastating scope of his wife's treachery finally came crashing down around him. Before he could speak, the heavy steel door behind them suddenly slammed shut with a deafening, automatic CLANG, and the security lock engaged from the outside with a mechanical whir.
