Chapter 12 - The Crawlspace

Julian boosted Clara up toward the ventilation shaft set high into the concrete wall near the ceiling. The metal grate was held in place by four rusted Phillips-head screws, which Clara attacked frantically using the flat metal edge of the empty amber vial as an improvised screwdriver. With a sharp twist, the final screw gave way, and the heavy metal grate clattered softly onto the concrete floor below. Clara hoisted herself up into the dark, narrow duct, her dark maid uniform scraping against the rough galvanized tin walls as she wriggled forward into the suffocating gloom.
"Do you smell that?" Clara's muffled voice echoed back down the shaft to Julian.
Julian jumped up, catching the edge of the opening with his hands and pulling his tall frame effortlessly into the tight ventilation tunnel behind her. He flicked on his tactical flashlight, casting a narrow beam ahead of them. The metal tube was lined with old cobwebs and a thick layer of soot, but a cool, fresh breeze was gently blowing from somewhere further down the line—a sign that the duct connected to the estate’s main HVAC exhaust leading outside to the gardens.
"Keep moving," Julian instructed quietly, crawling on his hands and knees through the tight space. "That breeze means we're heading toward the exterior perimeter wall."
They crawled in silence for several minutes, the metallic clanking of their movements echoing softly through the subterranean network of Blackwood Estate. Every inch they covered brought them further away from the locked vault and closer to freedom, but the physical strain of the day was catching up to them. Clara’s bruised forehead throbbed with every pulse, and her arms felt like lead, but the thought of little Lily waiting safely at St. Jude’s Pediatric kept her moving forward through the suffocating dark.
Suddenly, the floor of the ventilation duct dropped away into a wide, vertical junction box that intersected with the main wiring chase of the mansion's west wing. Clara stopped abruptly, clinging to the edge of the drop-off as she aimed her phone light down into the dark abyss.
"It's a drop," Clara whispered back over her shoulder. "About ten feet down into a maintenance corridor."
Julian crawled up beside her, shining his powerful flashlight down into the concrete corridor below. The beam illuminated a heavy metal fire exit door marked with a glowing red emergency sign—the very same service exit that Marcus had used to infiltrate the mansion earlier that morning.
"That door leads directly to the exterior rose gardens," Julian said with a grim smile. "We're almost out."
Before Julian could lower himself down into the maintenance corridor, the sharp, distinct sound of heavy footsteps echoing up from the bottom of the corridor froze them both in place. Someone was standing directly beneath the ventilation junction box, shining a high-powered tactical flashlight straight up into the dark ductwork.

"I know you're up there, Julian," a smooth, chillingly familiar voice called out from the shadows below.
