Chapter 9 - The Tunnel Escape

The deafening crack of the gunshot reverberated off the damp stone walls, sending a shower of sharp glass shards raining down onto the concrete floor. Clara didn't hesitate any longer. Clutching the trembling, blanket-wrapped form of little Lily tightly to her chest, she threw herself backward into the dark, yawning maw of the drainage tunnel, disappearing into the freezing rush of shallow water below.

Marcus collapsed against the brick foundation, his breathing turning into a shallow rattle as the dark stain on his chest expanded. "Go, Arthur... save your daughter," he whispered, his eyes fluttering closed as his head slumped sideways.

Arthur spun around, grabbing the heavy wrench from the floor just as a second gunshot rang out, the bullet ricocheting off the iron hatch with a blinding spark of orange light. At the top of the stairs, a heavily armored figure in matte-black tactical gear descended into the dim cellar, raising a suppressed carbine directly toward Arthur’s chest.

Without thinking, Arthur hurled the heavy steel wrench with every ounce of his remaining strength. It caught the operative squarely in the visor of his tactical helmet with a sickening thud, staggering the man backward and throwing his aim off just enough for the next round to punch harmlessly through the ceiling timber.

Arthur didn't wait to see if the man recovered. He dove headfirst through the open cistern hatch, plunging into the freezing, waist-deep water of the underground drainage channel. The impact knocked the wind from his lungs, the bitter cold biting instantly through his dark coat and shirt, but adrenaline kept him moving. He scrambled to his feet in the pitch-black tunnel, ducking his head beneath the low brick archway as another muffled shot pinged off the metal edge of the hatch behind him.

"Clara! Lily!" Arthur shouted hoarsely, his voice echoing loudly in the narrow, claustrophobic corridor.

"Over here! Mr. Russo, hurry!" Clara’s panicked voice echoed back from fifty yards ahead, muffled by the rushing sound of the underground current.

Arthur pushed forward through the icy water, his boots slipping on the slick, algae-covered brick floor. The air in the tunnel was thick, stale, and heavy with the smell of old iron and damp earth. He knew they only had minutes before the corporate operatives realized there was a secondary exit and cut them off at the drainage outlet near the south perimeter fence.
