Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Cellar

The damp, metallic scent of concrete and old dust billowed out of the dark cellar as Arthur descended the steps two at a time. His heavy coat snagged on a protruding wooden shelf, but he tore it free without slowing down. The beam of light from the open kitchen overhead cut a pale yellow path down the winding staircase, illuminating nothing but empty wooden crates and hanging cobwebs.

"Lily!" Arthur shouted, his voice echoing off the damp stone walls. There was no answer, only a faint, rhythmic scratching sound coming from the far corner behind the old fruit storage racks.

He fumbled along the freezing wall until his hand struck the cold plastic toggle of a light switch. With a sharp flick, a dim, flickering incandescent bulb overhead sputtered to life, casting long, jittery shadows across the cellar floor. What he saw made his breath catch in his throat. Ten-year-old Lily was curled into a tight ball against the base of the brick foundation, her face pressed hard against her knees, completely motionless.

"Lily, baby, daddy's here," Arthur choked out, dropping heavily to his knees beside her small frame.

He reached out trembling fingers and gently rolled her onto her back. Her lips were a terrifying shade of blue, her chest completely still, refusing to rise or fall. The panic that had been simmering in his chest boiled over into blinding terror. He brought the small blue asthma inhaler to her lips, pressing the plastic canister with all his strength, but nothing happened. The chamber was empty. The rescue medication had already been exhausted, or worse, withheld.

Footsteps echoed softly on the wooden stairs behind him. Arthur whipped his head around, his eyes blazing with a fury that could melt steel. Victoria stood at the bottom of the stairs, her satin blouse unblemished, her expression entirely devoid of remorse. She casually adjusted her pearl necklace, looking down at the dying child with cold detachment.

"She was becoming a liability, Arthur," Victoria said smoothly, her voice eerily calm as she took another step down into the freezing dark. "You know how fragile our arrangement is."
