Chapter 6 - Pitch Black

The sudden plunge into total darkness swallowed the cellar whole, leaving only the sound of Lily’s ragged, whistling breaths and Clara’s muffled whimpers echoing off the cold stone walls. Arthur stood frozen in the center of the room, his hand still gripping the icy brass doorknob of the sealed staircase. His mind raced through the blueprints of the old Victorian mansion, calculating every possible architectural flaw, every hidden utility shaft, and every forgotten escape route built into the foundation a century ago.
"Mr. Russo? I can't see my hands," Clara whispered, her voice trembling violently as she felt her way along the wall toward where she had left Lily. "Is she still breathing? Tell me she's still breathing!"
"She's breathing, Clara. Keep your voice down and stay where you are," Arthur commanded, his tone steady despite the blinding panic clawing at his own chest.
He reached into the pocket of his dark coat, his fingers searching frantically through receipts and keys until they brushed against the smooth metal casing of his heavy executive penlight. With a sharp click, a thin, piercing beam of white LED light cut through the oppressive darkness, illuminating floating dust motes and casting long, grotesque shadows against the damp brick foundation.
He swept the light across the floor, finding Lily curled tightly on the wool blanket, her eyes wide with terror as she stared up at the ceiling. Clara was kneeling beside her, holding the child’s small, ice-cold hand.
"Daddy, it hurts," Lily whimpered, her voice barely audible over the distant, wailing sirens that were now growing much louder outside the estate gates.
"I know, baby. We're going to get out of here right now," Arthur said, though his heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He scanned the stone walls illuminated by his penlight until his eyes locked onto a rusted iron access panel tucked low behind the old fruit racks—a maintenance hatch leading directly to the old cistern system beneath the western gardens.
He hurried over, kicking aside wooden crates, and dropped to his knees. The heavy iron latch was crusted with decades of corrosion, sealed shut with thick layers of old lead paint. He grabbed a heavy wrench from a nearby tool bucket and began hammering desperately at the rusted hinges, the metallic crashes echoing thunderously in the enclosed space.
Upstairs, the heavy thud of footsteps raced across the kitchen floor, followed by the violent rattling of the exterior French doors. Victoria was trying to flee the property before the troopers breached the main gates, but the automated lockdown protocol Arthur had triggered earlier had sealed every exit point in the mansion.

"She's coming back!" Clara gasped, looking nervously toward the locked cellar door as heavy footsteps began descending the stairs once again.
