Chapter 1 - The Heavy Door

Arthur Russo’s heavy coat brushed against the marble countertop as the cold air from the foyer rushed into the brightly lit, upscale kitchen. His knuckles were white, his dark hair slightly disheveled from the frantic drive through the gated estate. Across the room, thirty-five-year-old Victoria stood rigidly in her pristine white satin shirt, her pearl necklace glowing under the recessed lighting. She was aggressively gripping the forearm of Clara, a twenty-five-year-old maid whose messy hair framed a bruised cheek and a fresh cut lip. Clara looked terrified, her uniform apron stained and askew, desperately lunging toward the walk-in pantry door.

"Give me the key!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking with raw panic. "She can't breathe! Stay out of this!"

Victoria tightened her grip, her blue eyes flashing with cold defiance. "She was having a tantrum, she needed to calm down, she was wheezing, attacked me!"

Arthur stepped closer, his voice cutting through the escalating tension like a blade. "Where is my daughter?"

"In the cellar! Lily!" Clara cried, tears spilling over her bruised face.

Arthur’s hand shot out, his fingers prying the brass house keys directly from Victoria’s palm despite her sharp gasp of protest.

"The key," Arthur demanded, his tone dropping an octave into a terrifying, quiet fury.

Clara immediately thrust her palm forward, revealing a small blue asthma inhaler stained with a smudge of fresh blood. "Mr. Russo, Lily dropped it when Victoria grabbed her."

Arthur stared at the inhaler, the color draining entirely from his stern face as the horrific implication settled into his bones. "You knew she had asthma?" he whispered, his eyes widening in absolute shock.

"She stopped answering me," Clara sobbed.

Without another word, Arthur spun around and lunged at the heavy walk-in pantry door, jamming the brass key into the old iron lock. The mechanism clicked loudly, echoing in the silent kitchen, and he yanked the heavy oak door open to reveal pitch-black stairs leading down into the freezing darkness.
