Chapter 3 - The Price of Silence

Arthur rose slowly from the concrete floor, his massive frame blocking Victoria's path to the stairs. His dark eyes burned into her with a terrifying intensity that made even Victoria hesitate for a fraction of a second. She took a half-step back, her fingers nervously tracing the expensive pearls at her throat, though her posture remained rigidly defensive.
"You locked a ten-year-old child in a freezing cellar without her medication," Arthur said, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all human warmth. "You didn't just isolate her, Victoria. You executed a slow, calculated suffocation."
"Don't be dramatic," Victoria snapped back, lifting her chin with aristocratic arrogance. "You travel for weeks on end, leaving me to deal with her hysterical fits. That child is unstable. She ruined my reception last month by screaming at the guests. I simply enforced discipline. The pantry was the only place she couldn't tear things apart."
Upstairs, a faint scuffling sound announced Clara’s cautious descent. The young maid stopped halfway down the steps, clutching a wool blanket and a glass of warm water, her eyes darting fearfully between the two adults. She looked at Lily’s motionless small form on the floor, then back at Victoria’s unfeeling face.
"She's turning blue, Mr. Russo," Clara whimpered, holding out the blanket like a shield. "We need an ambulance right now. If she dies down here, they’ll trace the lock logs from the security system."
Victoria shot Clara a venomous glare that could freeze fire. "Shut your mouth, you little gutter rat. You were supposed to be cleaning the east wing, not snooping by the pantry. One word of this to the authorities, and I will make sure you never work a day in this state again. I’ll ruin your family, your name, everything."
Arthur didn't blink. He reached past Victoria, ignoring her sharp intake of breath, and grabbed the heavy iron security phone attached to the cellar wall. He pressed the emergency override button, connecting directly to the private estate security gate.
"This is Arthur Russo," he commanded into the receiver, his gaze never leaving Victoria’s suddenly pale face. "Lock down the perimeter. No vehicles leave the property. Call local dispatch and tell them to send paramedics and state troopers immediately."

Victoria’s composure fractured instantly. She lunged forward to rip the phone from the wall, screaming a curse that revealed the absolute panic beneath her polished exterior.
