Chapter 8 - Breaking Point

Before Arthur could answer, a loud, concussive bang echoed through the floorboards above, followed by the splintering sound of heavy oak giving way under a hydraulic breaching tool. The front kitchen door had been forced open. Heavy, synchronized boots pounded across the hardwood floors upstairs, moving with ruthless, mechanical precision toward the cellar entrance.

"They found the latch," Arthur muttered, his jaw clenching so hard his teeth ached. He abandoned the rusted cistern hatch and rushed over to Marcus, grabbing the wounded man by the shoulders and hauling him upright against the damp wall. "Marcus, stay with me. How many of them?"

"Three... maybe four," Marcus wheezed, blood bubbling at the corner of his mouth. "They disabled the security feeds. They're here to clean house, Arthur. Victoria miscalculated. They didn't come to negotiate an exit; they came to eliminate witnesses."

Clara let out a muffled sob, rocking back and forth with Lily in her arms. "We're going to die down here. Mr. Russo, please, we have to hide."

"There's nowhere to hide," Arthur said grimly, scanning the small, open cellar. His eyes landed once again on the rusted iron cistern hatch he had been hammering open. It was cracked open by barely an inch, just enough for a small child to slip through into the drainage tunnels leading out toward the estate’s drainage lake.

He didn't hesitate. He dropped to his knees, driving the heavy wrench into the crack of the iron hatch and throwing his entire body weight against the handle. With a sharp, deafening screech of stressed metal, the rusted latch finally snapped off completely, sending a shower of red iron flakes across the concrete floor.

A heavy, booted foot slammed down onto the top step of the cellar stairs above. A sharp beam of white tactical flashlight cut through the gloom, sweeping across the room and locking instantly onto Arthur and Marcus.

"Freeze! Stay where you are!" a harsh, synthetic voice barked from the top of the stairs, accompanied by the metallic click-clack of a firearm bolt sliding home.

Arthur ignored the command. He yanked the heavy iron hatch wide open, exposing a dark, terrifying drop into the brick-lined drainage tunnel below. He turned back to Clara, grabbing her by the shoulders and pulling her toward the opening.

"Clara, take Lily and go down into the tunnel. Follow the running water straight toward the south gate. Don't look back!" Arthur ordered fiercely.

"No! Mr. Russo, I won't leave you!" Clara cried, tears streaming down her bruised face.

"Go!" Arthur roared, shoving her gently toward the dark opening just as a gunshot cracked through the cellar, shattering a glass jar inches above their heads.
