Chapter 12 - The Federal Shield

Agent Miller’s sharp gaze swept over Clara’s bruised face, Arthur’s mud-stained coat, and little Lily wrapped tightly in the wool blanket. The federal investigator didn't draw a weapon, but his hand rested casually near his holster as two additional unmarked cruisers pulled up behind the black sedan, their emergency lights flashing a muted red and blue against the dark pine trees.
"You're cutting it close, Miller," Arthur said, his voice cold and steady as he stepped between the federal agent and the truck where Lily lay resting. "If your tactical monitoring unit was online twenty minutes ago, why did it take a private extraction squad to breach my house before your backup arrived?"
Agent Miller’s expression tightened slightly, a flicker of professional discomfort crossing his features. "We’ve been building a RICO case against the Russo Global board for eighteen months, Mr. Russo. Victoria’s alliance with the corporate directors triggered an automated compliance flag on your estate’s offshore accounts tonight. We were moving to secure the perimeter legally when your smart-home lockouts activated prematurely."
"Prematurely?" Arthur scoffed, stepping closer. "They locked my daughter in a freezing cellar without her rescue medication to force a hostile trust dissolution! That wasn't a corporate restructure, Miller. That was attempted murder."
Clara pushed herself up from the gravel shoulder, stepping forward into the headlights. "He’s telling the truth, Agent. Victoria threatened me, she locked us down there, and those men in tactical gear... they weren't police. They came down the stairs with weapons drawn to clean house."
Miller’s eyes flicked to Clara’s bruised cheek and cut lip, his professional detachment slipping away to reveal genuine concern. He pulled out a secure satellite radio from his coat pocket and spoke a rapid series of coded commands into the receiver. Within seconds, the doors of the trailing cruisers opened, and federal medical personnel rushed forward with emergency kits, immediately surrounding the truck to tend to Lily and Clara.
"We have a secure safehouse thirty miles north," Miller said, looking directly into Arthur’s unyielding eyes. "Victoria is still inside the main estate house, and our units are moving in to execute the arrest warrants right now. But Arthur... there's something in the master safe that you need to see before we walk into the debriefing."

Arthur paused, his hand tightening into a fist. "What kind of something?"
