CHAPTER 8: CORNERED

Elena walked into the sun-drenched drawing room, her back straight and her head held high.
Victoria sat on the velvet sofa, holding a pristine cup of black tea. Standing behind her were two burly private security guards in black suits. Little Leo was sleeping peacefully in his stroller near the fireplace.
“You’ve been asking questions around town, Elena,” Victoria began, setting her teacup down without making a sound. “You visited St. Jude’s Hospital yesterday.”
“I had a right to my own medical history,” Elena replied calmly.
Victoria smiled thinly, a predator looking at trapped prey. “You don't have rights here, Elena. You have a position, and that position has just been terminated. Hand over your phone, take your severance package, and my men will escort you off the property.”
One of the guards stepped forward, extending a gloved hand toward Elena.
Elena didn't move. She reached into her apron pocket, pulled out the printed DNA report and the photographs of the wire transfers, and tossed them onto the glass coffee table.
“I know everything, Victoria,” Elena said, her voice ringing clear and steady across the room. “I know about the two million dollars to Dr. Campbell. I know about the falsified death certificate. And this lab report proves Leo is my biological son.”
Victoria’s composed mask shattered for a split second. Her eyes flared with genuine shock before hardening into venomous determination.

“Security,” Victoria commanded coldly. “Destroy those papers. Confiscate her phone. Lock her in the wine cellar until my attorney arrives.”
