CHAPTER 14: HEALING SCARS
Spring arrived, painting Elena’s backyard in vibrant shades of green and gold.
Elena sat on the wooden porch swing, watching Leo crawl across a colorful play mat on the grass. He was laughing, his chubby hands grabbing at dandelion seeds drifting on the breeze.
He looked so much like Julian. He had his father’s bright, curious eyes and his warm, infectious smile.
Elena pulled up Leo’s tiny pant leg as he crawled onto her lap. She touched the purple crescent moon mark on his ankle. For months, that mark had been a symbol of pain, deceit, and stolen time. But now, as she traced it with her thumb, it felt like a badge of resilience—a guiding star that had brought her baby back to her arms.
A gentle knock sounded at the garden gate.
It was Sergeant Ramirez, now a close family friend, holding a box of fresh pastries and a small toy fire truck for Leo.
“How’s the little guy doing?” Ramirez asked, smiling as Leo squeaked with delight at the toy.
“He’s thriving,” Elena said, her voice rich with peace. “Every single day is a gift.”
“You did an amazing thing, Elena,” Ramirez said softly. “Most people would have backed down against a family with that kind of power.”
