CHAPTER 12: THE CUSTODY HEARING

The courtroom was packed with journalists, legal observers, and curious spectators when Judge Evelyn Ross slammed her gavel onto the bench.

“Order in this court,” Judge Ross commanded, peering over her reading glasses at the defense counsel representing the Sterling estate.

Victoria’s high-powered defense attorney stood up, adjusting his silk tie. “Your Honor, we argue for temporary foster placement until a full federal audit of the hospital records can be completed. Ms. Vance does not have the financial stability to—”

“Sit down, counselor,” Judge Ross interrupted, her tone freezing the courtroom.

The judge picked up the certified genetic report and the sworn confession from Dr. Campbell.

“I have presided over family law for thirty-two years,” Judge Ross said, her voice echoing with profound authority. “And rarely have I witnessed an act of such calculated cruelty as the one committed against Elena Vance. The court finds the birth certificate naming Victoria Sterling as null and void due to proven criminal fraud.”

Judge Ross turned her gaze toward Elena, who sat at the petitioner’s table in her simple woolen coat, holding Leo.

“The State of Illinois recognizes Elena Vance as the sole, biological, and legal mother of this child,” Judge Ross declared, striking the gavel with finality. “Full custody is restored immediately. An emergency restraining order is hereby issued against all defendants. Case closed.”

Tears spilled freely down Elena’s cheeks as the gallery erupted into applause. She pressed her face against Leo’s soft head, whispering, “We’re going home, baby. We’re finally going home.”
