CHAPTER 11: THE SHADOW BROKER

While Elena waited at the precinct, the state police executed an emergency search warrant at the lakefront property of Dr. Arthur Campbell in Oakridge.

Campbell had already packed two leather suitcases and was attempting to load them into his sports car when three tactical units blocked his driveway.

Cornered and terrified of spending the rest of his life behind bars, Campbell broke down within minutes of his interrogation.

“It wasn’t just the Sterlings!” Campbell blubbered into the audio recorder, sweat drenching his collar. “Victoria came to me with cash. She said she needed an infant from a mother who had no family to fight back. I forged the stillbirth certificate, administered a sedative to Ms. Vance during labor, and smuggled the baby out the rear loading dock.”

“And the money?” the detective asked.

“Two million in a Cayman trust,” Campbell confessed, sobbing into his hands. “I gave half of it to the clinic administrator to wipe the hard drives. I have all the original server backups on an encrypted thumb drive in my safe. I’ll give you everything. Just plea-bargain the charges!”

Across town, Elena sat in a quiet family room at the courthouse. The evidence was no longer just a mother’s claim; it was an airtight, multi-layered criminal conspiracy with full confessions.
