CHAPTER 2: GHOSTS IN THE NURSERY

Night fell over the sprawling Sterling estate, wrapping the limestone mansion in heavy silence. Elena lay awake in her modest staff room above the detached garage, staring at the ceiling.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the crescent mark. She saw the doctor at St. Jude’s Memorial who had refused to let her see her dead child's body, citing protocol. She remembered how quickly the Sterling Foundation had swept in to pay her hospital bills out of supposed "philanthropy."
At 2:00 AM, Elena slipped out of bed, her bare feet silent on the cold stairs. She carried a small flashlight and a single swab wrapped in sterile plastic—a leftover from her first-aid kit.
The main house was dark and cavernous. She avoided the creaky boards near the grand staircase, making her way up to the third-floor nursery.
The room was bathed in soft blue nightlight. Little Leo slept peacefully in his crib. Elena approached on tiptoe, her breath catching. She gently lifted the hem of his pajama leg. There it was. Crisp, clear, undeniable.
With trembling hands, Elena took a quick cheek swab from the sleeping infant, sealing it inside a sterile vial.
Suddenly, a floorboard groaned outside in the hall.
Elena froze. The doorknob began to turn. Slipping the vial into her apron pocket, she grabbed a spare fleece blanket from the rocking chair.
The door swung open, revealing Richard Sterling, Victoria’s husband, holding a glass of scotch. He looked exhausted, the shadows under his eyes telling a story of heavy guilt.
“What are you doing here at this hour?” Richard demanded in a low, gravelly rasp.
Elena lowered her eyes, holding out the blanket. “The temperature dropped, sir. I was bringing an extra blanket for Master Leo.”
Richard stared at her for five long seconds. Then, his eyes softened with something resembling remorse. “Just… make sure he is safe. That’s all that matters now.”

He turned and walked away, leaving Elena standing in the dark, clutching the secret in her pocket.
