CHAPTER 1: THE CRESCENT MOON

The antique grandfather clock chimed in the grand marble foyer of the Sterling Manor. Elena stood frozen beside the ornate bassinet, clutching the newborn against her chest. Her knuckles were white, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Just seconds earlier, as she had tucked the cream blanket around the infant’s feet, her eyes caught it: a deep purple, crescent-shaped birthmark right above the tiny ankle.

It was impossible.

Ten months ago, in a cold, sterile clinic across town, Elena had been told her baby died during delivery. She had never even held him—only wept over a blank death certificate she was too broken to question. Yet her late husband, Julian, carried that exact same hereditary crescent mark on his left heel.

Footsteps clicked sharply against the checkered marble.

Victoria Sterling, dressed in a tailored charcoal blazer and glowing with cold authority, stopped at the doorway. Her sharp gaze narrowed as she took in Elena’s trembling posture.

“Is there a problem, Elena?” Victoria asked, her voice silky smooth yet laced with danger.

Elena swallowed her tears, burying her face slightly into the swaddle to mask her panic. “No, Madame. He… he just started fussing. I was soothing him before putting him down.”

Victoria took three measured strides forward, her polished heels echoing through the hollow room. She extended her manicured hands. “Give him to me.”

Elena felt every maternal instinct screaming to run, to bolt through the French doors into the morning mist. But logic held her feet planted. If this really was her stolen boy, running with no money, no proof, and no power against the Sterling family would get her destroyed.

Gently, agonizingly, she placed the baby into Victoria’s waiting arms.

“He is the future of this family,” Victoria murmured, staring down at the sleeping child without warmth, but with immense possessiveness. “He is worth everything. Do your job, Elena, and keep your mind on your duties. Nothing else.”

“Yes, Madame,” Elena whispered, bowing her head as the chill of the marble floor seeped into her bones.
