Chapter 8

The glass-walled executive suite of Hamilton Enterprises buzzed with quiet anxiety as the morning sunlight cut sharply across the polished conference table. Julian stood by the arched windows, staring down at the distant street traffic, his mind heavy with unresolved dread. The double doors swung open without a preliminary knock, and Marcus Vance walked in, accompanied not by junior aides, but by two federal compliance officers in dark suits. Julian spun around, his face flushing with immediate anger and indignation. "What is the meaning of this? Who authorized federal investigators on this floor?" Julian demanded, taking a sharp step forward. Marcus did not flinch; instead, he placed a thick manila folder directly in the center of the mahogany desk. "Sit down, Julian. You need to look at these documents immediately," Marcus said, his tone devoid of its usual subservient warmth. At that exact moment, Tatum emerged from the private executive lounge, her deep red dress rustling softly against the carpet, her expression shifting instantly into one of feigned alarm. "Marcus, what is happening here? This is completely unacceptable harassment!" she exclaimed, moving quickly to Julian’s side. Julian ignored her, his fingers pulling open the folder. Inside were certified bank records tracing millions of dollars in embezzled capital directly from the primary development fund into secret accounts registered under aliases controlled by Tatum and her brother. Furthermore, forensic handwriting and digital tracking proved conclusively that the medical files used to smear Elain and trick Julian into casting her out were entirely fabricated. The world seemed to tilt violently beneath Julian’s feet. The blood rushed in his ears, drowning out Tatum’s frantic, escalating denials. He looked from the undeniable financial proof on the desk to the woman standing beside him, whose carefully sculpted mask of innocent devotion was rapidly cracking under the weight of exposure.
