Chapter 10

The heavy rain outside Martha’s bakery had reduced to a steady, melancholic drizzle by the time a sleek black sedan pulled up quietly to the curb. Julian stepped out into the mist, wearing his black suit jacket drenched and wrinkled, completely stripped of his usual imposing aura. He stood before the modest wooden door for several long moments, his hand trembling as he raised it to knock. When Martha opened the door, her expression hardened instantly at the sight of him. She recognized the face from the tearful descriptions and the news alerts buzzing about the corporate scandal downtown. "You have a lot of nerve showing your face around here, Mr. Hamilton," Martha said coldly, blocking the entryway with her sturdy frame. "Please, Martha... I just need to speak with Elain. I know how unforgivable I’ve been, but I need to see her," Julian pleaded, his voice cracking with genuine anguish. From the shadows of the warm kitchen, Elain stepped forward, wrapped in the cozy woolen blanket, her green eyes calm and steady as she looked at the broken man standing in the doorway. She motioned for Martha to step aside, signaling for Julian to enter. Walking into the humble kitchen, Julian looked entirely diminished; the proud, aggressive man who had screamed at her in the luxury living room was gone, replaced by a broken soul drowning in remorse. He sank slowly to his knees on the wooden floor before her, unable to meet her gaze directly. "Elain... I was a monster. I let my pride and a manipulative liar blind me to everything that mattered. I’ve lost the company, I’ve lost my standing, but losing you... that is the punishment I deserve," he choked out, tears finally spilling over his own lashes. Elain looked down at him, the red mark on her cheek long since faded, but the emotional scars still tender. She felt no rush of triumphant malice, only a profound, liberating pity for the man who had allowed his own arrogance to destroy his paradise.
